THE HARD ROAD TO STARDOM

Read the text and do the exercises below.

He is the world's most famous athlete. He has starred in commercials for trainers, fast food and underwear. He starred in the hit movie Space Jam. He is Michael Jordan, a star of stars. But has it always been this easy?

He grew up in a small town in North Carolina, USA, one of five children. Michael, youngest of three boys, was the outgoing one. "As I started to grow" he says" my father always gave more confidence to my brothers because I was taller and things were easier for me. So, I felt I had to prove myself."

He also had to face some racism. In 1971, when Michael was 7, he had an experience he will never forget. " One day, when Michael got on the school bus and took a seat at the front, a white girl told him to get up because he was black, " his mother recalls. "When he didn't, she spat on him. So he hit her" Michael was suspended from school. His parents didn't blame him, but his mother said: "Outside this door, all sorts of things will happen. Don't let it affect you"

As he grew up, Michel Jordan experienced many of the same feelings that other teenagers do. He worried about the way he looked and he never believed anyone would want to marry him. And the real reason he started playing basketball was because he thought being on the team would make him look cool.

FASHION

Read the text on text and answer the questions. Remember to give FULL answers.

FASHION

When we buy clothes there are a lot of complex decisions to make. Is fashion, comfort or price the most important thing to consider? Does it matter if you wear different clothes from all your friends? We asked two young people what they think:

Damian ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●

Well, I suppose fashion is important to me, but I like to be comfortable too. I do a lot of sport so I like more casual clothes – but I prefer to buy smarter tracksuits and trainers. My friends all wear them, although they don’t all do sports! I don’t think the clothes you wear are the most important thing about you. Some of the boys in my class wear quite old-fashioned clothes, but they’ve got girlfriends – it doesn’t make any difference. The most important thing is to be yourself.

Sally ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●

I like designer clothes because I think the quality is better. Of course, they’re more expensive and I haven’t got much money so I buy other clothes too. I think most designer clothes are too expensive – they should be cheaper. I never buy things that are on special offer – they’re usually the clothes that the shop can’t sell and they’re always horrible. I think being comfortable is as important as looking good. Most of my friends are interested in fashion too.
